For the piston material, POM C was chosen, a technopolymer with high mechanical performance and a very low friction coefficient as it is self-lubricating.
The rack was manufactured using MIM (Metal Injection Moulding) technology, as this production process guarantees dimensional precision and robustness equal to machining from solid.
The rack comes with the second tooth missing and the third already lowered by 3 tenths of a millimetre, as this configuration sets up the piston itself for a correct angle of engagement (AOE) and makes it suitable for high speed.
The type of metal injected is SAE 4650, which is currently considered the best material on the market for this type of use.
The sliding guides are designed to minimise friction and retain the lubricant for a long period of time.
The rack seat is off-centre to facilitate the coupling between the piston teeth and those of the sectoral gear.
Longitudinal reinforcements on either side of the teeth increase the piston's strength and prevent contact of the rack with the cylinder's inner wall.
Special ribbing decreases the contact surface between the spring and the inside of the piston body and consequently also reduces the friction between metal and technopolymer during contraction and elongation due to the firing cycle
